Fragility (2001)

A contemporary state of being we have all experienced. Those times when we abandon our strength to confront our weaknesses. Moments when we are caught off guard. When emotions are spontaneous. When we reveal who we really are. Fragility is to do with walking on the edge. With being vulnerable.

The work interprets ‘fragility’ at a conceptual and formal level. What is emotion and its parallel physical. ‘Fragility’ seeks to break the myth of the ‘strong, beautiful’ dancer, an impenetrable creature that we idolize. That body that is eventually objectified. Instead we explore the ‘human’ aspect of physicality. We push the boundaries of movement to the point when we are left suspended in space. We search within those aspects of movement that have nothing to do with form. What happens when a dancer is stripped of all physical tools? It is time to demystify. To de-codify. To speak a physical language that needs no tradition simply to create those moments of recognition. Those moments that speak with more clarity than even words. To make the journey as performers that allows people to see our world. A world of fragility and transcendence. A world where breaths are held, where muscles tremble, where emotions flow. Fragility.
